Their parents have generally had a good employment thing, Osrow says. This generation is looking for upward mobility, for companies that invest in them, and theyre also looking at the work-life balance culture. Many job search experts and career coaches say transferable skills will help bridge the gap, but what does this phrase mean if youre the one receiving the pink slip?Heres how to transfer your current skills to win your next jobStart with your transferable skills, but dont stop there.You are not your job title.If youre facing a layoff or youre already there, dont limit your identity. You are much more than a job title. Actually, this rapidly changing, fluid job market makes it dangerous to tie yourself to a title.Begin by viewing your work experience as a set of competencies and roles that you have mastered and that can be useful from one occupation or industry to another. T his is what is meant by the term transferable skills. They afford you versatility and adaptability, and they open up new possibilities.But selling the skills alone is not enough.Tie benefits to each transferable skill.Sell results instead of skills. Especially today, skills are just a commodity.Employers buy results and are less impressed when a candidate promotes a laundry list of skills. Therefore, you should define how those transferable skills have been assets to your employers.Another way of looking at this is to ask yourself, How am I an asset to a companys balance sheet? You have a unique set of skills, experiences and talents. Now turn them into a unique selling proposition for the employer. A good USP says, Heres what I can do for you by highlighting one major benefit that you bring to this employer.Often called a personal branding statement, your USP provides the first impression of who you are and what you offer a potential employer. This is also how you describe yourself in any networking meeting you attend. A good USP will get you remembered and put you on the to-call list.A unique selling proposition is deceptively simple, yet it can be really tough to come up with one. It is a one-sentence description of the essence of you. This is your brand, your slogan - so take the time and thought to develop the right message for yourself. That one sentence should say three very important things 1.) Who you are 2.) your biggest strength and finally, 3.) the biggest benefit that you bring to the employer.For the greatest impact, that benefit should be something measurable. And the very best measure is dollars.Here is an example of a USPHands-on Operations Manager with strong people and team-building skills who has helped produce revenues of $2.8 million with a 22 percent margin for my previous employer.Notice that this simple sentence covers all three elements we discussed and ends with a desirable benefit that most any employer would love to have.SummaryIf you have to look beyond your present industry or job title for your next position, identifying those transferable skills is a good exercise. But remember Its only a starting point. Take a step further and think about how each of those skills actually benefits your employer. Then demonstrate how each of those skills answers an employers specific need and how it has made life better in some way for them. That means turning those skills into achievements and finally, summarizing them into a one-sentence USP that can stop a potential employer in their tracks and whet their appetite to know more.

Plasma Pulsing Reanimates Wells Plasma Pulsing Reanimates Wells Oil and natural gas wells stop producing long before theyve sucked dry all the resources in a reservoir. Particles of dirt, rock, as well as deposits of wax and other debris eventually clog the drainage area as well as the pores and passages introduced at a wells birth. When debris first kills production, typically less than half of the resources below have been harvested. Now clogged wells can be cheaply and cleanly rejuvenated with plasma pulse technology. In the past, well owners hoping to flush out those plugged channels and get things moving again had to turn to dense chemicals, packers and high pressure, or explosives. Each of these comes with its own set of environmental dangers. And they can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. But now, with a technology developed in Russia, the well treatment company Propell has slashed those risks and the price tag, too. Natural gas and oil companies with a delinquent well can start producing again with a mere $10,000 or so, and with little cost to the environment. The technique is fairly simple. A long tube is lowered into the well. Capacitors are charged and then dump their power in an instantmicroseconds, actually. How we generate the plasma is very much like a light bulb, says Trent Hunter, Propells CTO. We have a filament that extends across two terminals and when we discharge electricity stored in the tool, that filament glows white-hot and ultimately explodes. Its the very fast release of that energy that generates the high power to create the shock wave. Some call it non-linear physics. I dont think of it as nonlinear, I tend to think of it as very quickwe get a pressure pulse that goes form zero, to orders of magnitude of 10,000 psi, instantaneously. The Plasma Pulse Streamer. Image: Propell Shock Wave That plasma bubble travels laterally at a mile per second, hauling a shock wave along behind it, and radiating outward like waves in pondbut very fast waves. Its also tuned to induce harmonics in the reservoir. Together, the shock wave and harmonics blast and clear away plugs in the well and any other potentially productive passage. Conveniently, the blast is powerful enough to crush rock, but not so powerful as to harm steel. Its similar to hitting a brick on an anvil with a hammer, says Hunter. The brick gets smashed in the middle, but the steel is undamaged. It can absorb the energy of the hammer. Thus the well gets cleaned but remains undamaged. Other rehabilitative tools need to be pulled out of a well after a single blast, and must be redressed before being used again. But the plasma pulse streamer, as the tool is known, can deliver several sets of 100 pulses at a go. The entire treatment requires much less manpower and can be completed in a matter of hours, making it a cheap and more environmentally friendly option. Certainly our technique has a very low footprint from a couple of different perspectives relative to our competition, says Hunter. Its a low-energy technique, and its a low time and intervention technique, so we expend less carbon. Its less pressure, and we dont use explosives, and we dont use chemicals. Cheaper and Cleaner Oil and natural gas companies usually need rehabilitation sometime between the middle and end of a wells life. But this technology has shown that there are advantages to using their treatment at the start. Before a well has produced its first barrel, drilling fluids may slow flow. They get more productivity out of their well when they treat it with plasma pulsing at day one, rather than two or three years down the road, says Hunter. Whenever its used, the plasma pulse offers a cheaper, cleaner treatment than the options available in the past. As an intervention technique, says Hunter, it is, in my opinion, one of the most compelling value propositions out there to rehabilitate productivity without the risks of the other techniques. So share your thoughts, but don’t come across as insulting or condescending. Don’t arrive on time, have your resume on hand or remember the key achievements you want to highlight? Don’t expect a call back from a recruiter. “Interviewers never want candidates who are unprepared, as that suggests you might be unprepared when you show up for work,” Bairre says. “Come to your interview prepared with 3-5 talking points [and] supporting stories and accomplishments that highlight how you are uniquely qualified for the specific job you applied for.” It’s pretty tough to find a job where you primarily work on your own without interacting with others - most companies today are highly collaborative. Because of this, verifying in an interview that you play nice with others is often top-of-mind for recruiters and hiring managers. “Being rude or disrespectful is a good way to remove yourself from consideration,” Becker says. “Since good recruiters have a strong relationship with their clients and hiring managers, it can reflect poorly on them to present a candidate with a poor attitude.” So make sure to say “please” and “thank you”, practice active listening and generally treat others the way you would like to be treated. Another way to prove that you’re a team player is showing humility. Otherwise, you risk looking like a know-it-all. “ Confidence is a great skill to have - however, there’s a fine line between being confident and arrogant,” Becker says. “As a recruiter, I’ve had candidate proudly tell me their six months in the industry is equal to someone with three years of experience” - a major no-no. You want to flaunt your skills without making it sound like it’s your way or the highway. To do this, be realistic about your abilities, share stories that illustrate your wins rather than just saying “I’m awesome at XYZ” and make sure to give credit where credit is due. When you first meet with a recruiter or hiring manager, you probably have about 15-30 minutes to make a lasting impression - so make it count. Avoid the flowery language and details, and get straight to the meat. “Recruiters and hiring managers never want your entire life story. Candidates who include too much information… make it harder for the hiring manager to sort through all the information and decide what information may be relevant,” Bairre says. Instead, Bairre recommends sticking strictly to your relevant experience and leaving out the rest. If there’s one way to become forgettable in an interview, it’s to reveal that you haven’t done your research on a company. Learning the basic facts about a company - like their industry, competitors and names of their executives - as well as a little interview prep is a must if you want to impress. “Always do your research about the position, department and company where you are interviewing. Read company websites, reviews on Glassdoor and ask your contacts for information” ahead of an interview, West advises. “Come prepared with questions like ‘What makes your most successful employees in this role thrive?’ or ‘What pain points/challenges can the right candidate in this role solve?’” adds Kennedy. “Coming with a pre-written list of questions and taking notes on the answers will really show me you are motivated for the role.” No matter how casual the office, you always want to mind your Ps and Qs. Men who were in the top quartile of centrality  among their MBA network found jobs with 1.5 times greater pay and authority than those who were least central.Uzzi has a simple explanation for why centrality makes all the difference.“Centrality is positively correlated with  accessing job market information,” he writes.” Even though much of this is publicly available online, it can be much faster to get the information you need from  different MBA students  who have contacts across various groups of students who are familiar with employers you’re interested in.”What changes for women?If women follow their male colleagues’ lead, chances are they’ll fall short of expectations.“Women who had networks tha t most resembled those of successful men… placed into leadership positions that were among the lowest in authority and pay,” Uzzi says.Instead, he and his co-authors found that women required one additional ingredient for success - and those who had it could expect jobs with much higher authority and pay than their peers who didn’t.Women do need centrality in their network, like men, Uzzi explains. But they also require “an inner circle of close female contacts” if they want access to the upper echelons of executive leadership. Personally, I’ve lost count of the number of times I made an administrative mistake and figured that it wouldn’t be long before someone from HR came down to my desk and politely asked me to never show my face around the office again. But the good news is that unless someone has come to you and explicitly said that you’re on thin ice, most people understand (and accept!) that even the smartest people slip up. And that also applies to you. You might be thinking, “Rich, this sounds great, but I’m still pretty sure that if my next email to my boss doesn’t have flawless grammar, she’s going to send me packing.” And trust me, I had that thought at least 25 times as I wrote this article, so I get where you’re coming from. But like most instances in which you feel insufficient for your job, putting yourself at ease is often as simple as asking for additional feedback on whatever’s worrying you. Here’s how it works: Find someone you trust and ask for their honest take. In this case, you might ask a co-worker to read over the email before you send it; in others, maybe you ask a small group to hear a trial run of your presentation, or to give you input after a meeting you led. You might not love everything you hear- but take it from me, a little constructive feedback can help you move forward because you’ll have the knowledge you need to tackle any real issues. (And if asking for honesty’s making you nervous, try this feedback trick.) Plus, you’ll find out how your colleagues feel about you and your work- and often times, that’s a quick fix for imposter syndrome. After all, half the battle is fighting back thoughts that everyone thinks poorly of you. So if you’re currently stuck in this “one slip-up and I’m out” mindset, you need to memorize this sentence (and keep saying it until you believe it): “Smart people make mistakes, too- and they also know when to ask for help.”

In fact, I just interviewed a young woman who was 12 weeks into the workforce and already frustrated with her career. She worked for a great company, had a great manager and liked her job so what was the deal? Get this: Her position had a two-year promotion track. Two years is like a decade to me, were her exact words. ManagingRacehorses I know, I know: Youre thinking thats ridiculous and she should feel lucky to be employed, right? Well, frankly, thats the problem. Because for as much as we like to moan about how long we had to pay our dues (and walk 8 miles in the snow) while insisting the next generation do the same, the fact of the matter is that its a different world. Yes, we can blame the parents for coddling their kids to the point thatthey expect you to cave in too. But it still doesnt change the fact thattop talent a.k.a. the ones we all want to hire are like racehorses behind the starting line. Theyre stomping, chomping at the bit, and just waiting for the doors of opportunity to fly open so they can chase the career carrot. Perhaps you recall the feeling.After all, its the reason you started your business in the first place. You wanted that entrepreneurial paradox of control and freedom. And so do they. Stoking Entrepreneurial Engagement Alright maybe you cant give them control. (After all, thats your job, right?) But there is something else you can give that means just at much if not more at this stage in their career. You can give them progress. Because heres the thing: Its easy for new grads to feel as if theyre falling behind when were all surrounded by tales of 27-year-old CEOs. (Geez, even I feel behind sometimes!) But if your hire feels that he or she is learning, growing, and advancing their skills and network they will reward you with employee loyalty! Just ask my first boss, Skip Lineberg, who turned what was supposed to be a temp job (for me) into a six year partnership not to mention a book deal. In retrospect, Im a little embarrassed to admit this but when I started working with Skip I asked for a promotion after just nine months. Here is the super-savvy way he managed it. First, he listened. He didnt try and convince me that I was too inexperienced or that nine months in the workforce was a little too early to get yippy about moving up. Instead, he heard me out and, after I made my case, he said hed give it some thought. Then, he asked me to prove my worth. He presented me with a simple one-pager called, Prove youre worth it. It was a list of 10 tasks I had to pick seven to complete in addition to the keeping up with the responsibilities of my current role. The list included things like: Picking a system in the office I felt could be improved and telling him how Id fix it. Hosting a Lunch n Learn for the rest of the staff. Attending a professional development course. Reading a classic business book and writing a summary of what I learned and how I was going to apply it to my job. You get the idea. Next, a check-in. He asked me to check-in with him after Id finished a task or if I had any questions along the way. After that, I was on my own. And while my manager never gave me a formal deadline (I suspect that was a not-so-subtle initiative test) it took me about 6 months to get all seven tasks complete. However, when everything was said and done I got the promotion and he got to buy some time. He also got to evaluate how I handled stress, how I solved problems, how committed I was, observemy employeeattitude and if what I would bring to jumping through those hoops to earn that new position. Smart cookie, huh? This was definitely a win-win for both of us and an exceptional example of great management skills.
