CFOs Influence Continues to Expand Management Resources

CFOs Influence Continues to Expand Management ResourcesCFOs Influence Continues to Expand Management ResourcesCFOs are expected to weigh in on a wide range of business matters that their organizations face, from compliance and regulatory issues, to internal controls and taxes, to major transactions and other significant changes. And in recent years, many CFOs have seen their influence expand beyond the accounting and finance function. For example, some finance leaders now collaborate frequently with human resources teams on benefits and other areas that not only affect a firms bottom line, but also its ability to attract and retain leading employees. Many CFOs find they also must collaborate with chief information officers on IT-related decision-making as technology becomes only more critical for everyday business operations. As the CFOs role continues to increase in importance, many employers are prepared to offer competitive compensation to secure top candidates for this critical C-l evel position. According to the 2019 Robert Half Salary Guide for Accounting and Finance Professionals, CFOs working in U.S. companies can expect to earn a midpoint salary of $196,750 in 2019.The CFO role other expectationsThe power to exert influence in business requires skill, knowledge and experience. That means CFOs, including those working in an interim management capacity, must bring strong analytical, strategic planning and communication skills to their role. This includes being able to work effectively with the CEO, members of the board and, as noted earlier, other senior managers. In addition, employers will expect CFOs to handle a wide range of responsibilities that may includeProviding strategic management of the accounting and finance functionsDirecting accounting policies, procedures and internal controlsRecommending improvements to ensure the integrity of a companys financial informationManaging or overseeing the relationship with the independent auditorsOverseeing fina ncial systems implementations and upgradesManaging relationships with investors and investment institutionsIdentifying and managing business risks and insurance requirementsHiring, training and retaining accounting and finance staffCFOs typically have at least 10 years of experience in the accounting or finance field, including a minimum of five years in a management role. The larger the firm, the more experience is required. Many companies prefer to hire candidates who have a masters degree in business administration and/or an in-demand designation, such as certified public accountant (CPA) or certified management accountant (CMA).CFOs should also possess knowledge of all aspects of generally accepted accounting principles. Public companies, or organizations planning for an initial public offering, need CFOs who have experience with U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission reporting. How Employers Can Encourage Healthy Food Choices at Work

How Employers Can Encourage Healthy Food Choices at WorkHow Employers Can Encourage Healthy Food Choices at WorkThink that your employees are interested in healthier food choices at work? They are- as long as you dont appear to be eliminating their other options. Providing nutritional food choices for employees at work is controversial among employees. But, it may assist with employee wohlbefinden even though you should never force nutritional food choices on employees. When is the last time you were offered a doughnut at a morning meeting? Healthier food and beverage choices may- just maybe- becoming more widespread in workplaces. Workplace Stories about Healthy Food Choices Several client companies provide a free lunch once a week and supply all beverages at work free of charge to employees. At one office, the vegetarian choice for the free Friday lunches is always heavily subscribed. But, when the final employees arrive for lunch, the vegetarian choices are often all that rema in. And, when you look at the lunches that are consistently left-over, the meat-free options top the list. Do employees delude themselves into thinking healthy thoughts, and then, when presented with the reality at the lunch, go for the meat- usually another employees choice? In another company, as parte of an effort to gauge employee interest in wohlbefinden activities, an employee team asked other employees about whether they desired more nutritious beverage choices. Pop, flavored water, coffee, and tea were their current choices. You would not believe the uproar, which even asking the question, caused. Employees were convinced that the food police were going to replace their favorite Coke, Pepsi, and Starbucks coffee with fruit juices and water. Such an uproar over a seemingly small issue surprised the teambut understand, the employee team was messing with the other employees 18 inches of personal space, that hypothetical area that surrounds each person. Employees 18 of Person al Space In this personal space, youll find what employees eat, what employees wear, and what employees are required to do, such as punch a time clock or sign in at the office when arriving at work. Nothing upsets employees more than when they believe that someone is interfering with their personal rights and space. This personal space issue is why dress codes are notoriously difficult to introduce. The cubicle police are regarded by some employees as slayers of employee self-expression other employees bless the day on which the pyramids of pop cans disappear. As you seek wellness options for employees, for best success, remember the significance of their 18 inches of space. Healthy Food Options in the Workplace According to a survey about healthy eating choices at work, commissioned by the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) The poll found responsive organizations giving their diverse community of employees what they want and need- a wide array of food options, said Mark Schmit, director of research at SHRM. HR professionals walk a fine line between creating initiatives to help employees and acting like the food police. Ultimately, the proactive approach to creating both formal and informal initiatives that support health and wellness, has been shown to have positive impacts on employees lives and organizations bottom lines. More than half the employers surveyed do promote healthy food and beverage choices by providing healthy choices for company meetings, parties, and eventsproviding healthier food options in office cafeterias andadding wholesome food options to vending machines. At the same time, nearly two-thirds of HR professionals surveyed do not think it is their responsibility to regulate employee food and beverage choices. The study found that employers in the Midwest (49 percent) were more likely than organizations in the West (29 percent) to have formal or informal policies promoting healthier food and drink options at work. Larger co mpanies and multinationals were more likely to offer these wellness choices. Given the choices made daily by Americans who prefer French fries to vegetables by a large margin, anything an employer can do to help can make a difference in employee eating choices. Did you know that salad consumption, as the main course at restaurants for lunch or dinner, has sunk by half since 1989 to 5 percent? The, now recommended, nine servings of vegetables a day for people eating 2000 calories, is nothing but a distant dream, according to Kim Severson, writing for The New York Times in Told to Eat Its Vegetables, America Orders Fries. This is shocking. But, consider the opportunity that you have for your next employee luncheon. Offer a variety of dark green, leafy lettuces with toppings that include vegetables, cheese, and meats dressings with several low-fat choices and crusty bakery breadwith peanut butter, jelly, and butter. You cant (and you shouldnt) try to control employee eating choices at work, but you can offer options that give everyone healthy choices. The rest is up to them.

How to change your life in 30 days End the year with a bang

How to change your life in 30 days End the year with a bangHow to change your life in 30 days End the year with a bangYour identity is not fixed, but highly fluid.Your identity follows your behaviors. How does this work?It works based on two very important psychological conceptsSelf-signaling which means that, as a person, you evaluate and judge yourself the same way you judge others - based on behavior. So, if you watch yourself do something, you identify yourself with that behavior. If you drink alcohol, for example, you begin to identify yourself as someone who drinks alcohol. If you wake up early, you identify yourself as someone who wakes up early. If you write articles online, you identify yourself as a writer. Thus, how you see yourself is highly fluid and based on your own behaviors. As your behavior changes, your perceived identity changes.Precognition which means that thoughts dont necessarily lead to behaviors, but that behaviors can also lead to thoughts. In other words, common wisdom suggests that your innerhalb world creates your outer world. Hence, mental creation precedes physical creation. This is certainly true. But behaviors (and environments) can also create internal states. For example, if you jump into an ice-cold bath, youll begin to experience a cascade of emotions and thoughts. Or lack of thoughts. What precognition shows is that you can actually PREDICT your inner state by behaving in certain ways, and by placing yourself in certain environments. Thus, change doesnt only happen from the inside out, but also from the outside in.Both of these ideas are strongly related to other research in psychology, which suggests that behaviors generally come BEFORE psychological states. Again, this goes against most common wisdom. My favorite example is the research on self-efficacy (confidence), which shows that confidence isnt what produces high perfassonance. But rather, that high performance is what produces confidence.Put simply, if you want to h ave confidence, you can have it. All you have to do is behave in desired ways, even for a short period of time. Why does all of this matter? It matters because you have the power to radically change your identity.Even at a biological level, new science in epigenetics and neuroplasticity is showing how malleable and fluid our biology is.The problem with succeedingMost people plateau.Even successful people. Its actually very common for people who are succeeding to get stuck.Think about some of your favorite authors, musicians, and even companies. At some point, they generally stop being as innovative. We all have that band we love, whose first doppelalbum or two had way more soul. Then, once they became famous, their music became far tamer. The same is often true of world-class chefs.Once a restaurant becomes highly successful, they usually stop innovating the menu as much.Once something is working, its hard to go back to ground zero.In psychological terms, your motivation can go from appro ach-oriented to avoid-oriented.Specifically, all goals are either offensive or defensive. If youre seeking to advance your current position, youre approaching. If youre seeking to maintain your position, or avoid something bad from happening, youre avoiding. When youre approaching, youre less concerned about risks and more focused on rewards. Youre willing to take risks. Youre willing to fail. Youre being PULLED forward. When youre avoiding, youre less concerned about the rewards and more focused on the risks. And you have no desire to proactively confront those risks. Instead, youre simply trying to shield yourself from any problems that come your way.Ive seen this with many of my role models. For example, some of my favorite authors have shifted from approach-oriented to avoid-oriented.I can see it in their work. Its become far safer. They are making far less significant ideological attempts in their writing. Their books are becoming more mainstream. Obviously calculated and less intuit ive and inspired. When you begin succeeding, your focus can shift from WHY to WHAT. Instead of operating from your core, youre simply trying to maintain success. This is how you get stuck. This is how you get confused and lose your identity. Are you on offense or defense? Are you approaching or avoiding? Are you proactively becoming the person you want to be?Or are you holding on to the person you think you are?The antidote Never stop re-inventing yourselfIn the brilliant Netflix documentary, Chefs Table, which highlights the lives of the worlds most successful chefs, one particular episode stands out.The number one chef in Asia, Gaggan Anand, is known for spontaneously throwing out his entire menu and starting from scratch. Even when his current menu is getting lots of attention. This may not seem like a big deal, but it is.When a restaurant starts getting recognized and certain awards, its generally based on the menu and overall atmosphere.Being literally number one in Asia, it would mak e sense for Gaggan to keep his restaurant how it is.But thats not what he does.Creativity, and always pushing his own boundaries, is what he is about. So just because something is working doesnt give him permission to stop evolving. So he reinvents himself.Over and over and over.No matter how hard it is to walk away from something brilliant.A true creator never stops pushing their boundaries. They never stop reinventing.Once you become awesome at something, use your new LEARNING ABILITIES to become awesome at something else. The whole notion of finding your calling has led people to have fixed views of themselves. There isnt just one thing you were born to do.You can expand and grow in countless ways. Especially after you learn the process of learning. You can take all of your experience becoming great at something, and quickly become proficient at something else.In this way, you never plateau. Youre always growing and evolving as a person. The 30-day challenge to finish 2018 with a bangG iven that your identity is fluid and malleable, you have an amazing opportunity to redefine who you are.All you have to do is consistently and boldly reshape your behavior. You can do this in the form of a 30-day challenge.Whats something youve wanted to do, that you havent done?Or, whats something that would clearly lead you to a place youd like to be?It could be 30 days of extreme health and fitness. That would definitely change things. It could be facing an extreme fear like 30 days of asking people on dates. It could be 30 days of writing articles, or filming videos.Whatever it is, if you do it for 30 days, your identity will change.Your fears will become cauterized and neutralized.Youll adapt to your new behaviors.Your psychological state will change.Youll begin to identify with your new behaviors. Will you have to deal with some negative emotions along the way? Will you face a load of resistance and fear? Will you want to quit? The answer is probably yes to all of those questions. But THIS is how you separate yourself from the masses. This is how you make quantum leaps in your progression, while most people make incremental progress. This is how you consciously shape your identity and future.Where will you be in 30 days from now?WHO will you be 30 days from now?Ready to upgrade?Ive created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. You follow this daily, your life will change very quickly.Get the cheat sheet hereThis article first appeared on Medium.

The ultimate guide to college grad hiring

The ultimate guide to college grad hiringThe ultimate guide to college grad hiringThe ultimate guide to college grad hiringGraduation season is around the corner, and while some almost-grads have jobs lined up, others are hungry for work. (After all, three out of four in the class of 2018 graduated without a job.)But getting your company in front of college graduates- and weeding through the crush of applicants that may be coming your way- takes a special approach.Come May, there are two million students who are out there that are unemployed, says Jill Tipograph, co-founder of Early Stage Careers, a career coaching service for young people. Its a very competitive and oversaturated market.Try these tactics to add new blood to your teamCultivate your social media presenceIf Generation Z is anything, theyre on social media- and all types, from Facebook to Instagram to Snapchat to Buzzfeed and Bustle. Your company should be present and active on as many platforms as you can manage, with a consistent message across the board.Dont expect them to come to you, says Jes Osrow, directory of people and culture for TodayTix. Thats a big misnomer even for the best companies. Youre missing out if youre not proactively finding those places where they are.If you dont know where that is, ask. Talk to your niece or nephew or neighbor or offer an Amazon gift card to anyone under 25 who can tell you how they found their last job, Osrow says.Be mindful of company cultureWhat corporations do in the world matters to Generation Z. Socially responsible programs are very important to them, says Paul McDonald, senior executive director at Robert Half. To the extent that your company is involved in projects and initiatives that help a program or cause, promote it as much as you can.Its also important that you know what youre offering, because new graduates have their eyes on the prize. Their parents have generally had a good employment thing, Osrow says. Its the empowerment generation, wh ich is great, but it makes it way more difficult for employers- especially old-school employers- to wrangle the necessary things to entice the top talent in that age group. In other words, give them the hard sell. This generation is looking for upward mobility, for companies that invest in them, and theyre also looking at the work-life balance culture. What Im hearing more and more is, We dont mind working hard, well work at 800 at night if we have to, but we want to leave at 5 each day to go to the gym or to get home and take care of our family, McDonald says. Thats highly encouraged, especially with technology today. A lot of the work can be done in an hour or two at night if required. We stress that, and thats a real attractant.Target nearby collegesForm partnerships with campus career centers. fruchtwein have career management systems to promote opportunities and can help employers with campus recruiting activities. They can also direct you to campus clubs that may produce good c andidates. You can get even more specific if you desire The recruiters at MySlumberYard.com target the professors themselves. We ask them to recruit top performing students for us, says Matthew Ross, co-owner and COO of the mattress review site. Youd be surprised by how receptive professors are to gestures from local companies. In 2018, several of our hires were a direct result of professor recommendations.Get them talkingNew graduates generally have little to no experience interviewing, so theyre probably nervous. Youll want to approach the interview with more flexibility.Set them at ease, McDonald says. Spend a little more time on lighter conversation than you would with an experienced person that youre recruiting. Ask them about some of the off-campus activities that might be on their resume. As a bonus, while youre doing that, you can evaluate the candidate for their soft skills- how they communicate, how they listen, whether theyre able to think critically and aufgabe solve. Your e going to find that youre evaluating on the potential of that person, because they dont have a lot of experience, McDonald says.Consider a temporary startWhen it comes to hiring college graduates, its difficult to know how theyre really going to perform on the job. Many more companies are starting to test drive their applicants before they give them full-time offers, Tipograph says. Weve seen this with Ivy League students. Theyll start them as an apprentice or on a three- to six-month project base with a stipend or paying hourly. This arrangement is useful to both parties Employers can see how an employee performs in real time, and employees can get a real sense of a companys culture and whether its a workplace they enjoy and feel they can thrive in.Contract work can also be attractive to graduates who hope to move on to masters level education. Those who plan to attend graduate school or medical school may want to benefit from gaining relevant experience while preparing for admissi ons, says Christine Casey-Charter, vice president of business development for HumanEdge. A year of contract employment in a related field is a tremendous career boost.

Transferable skills alone wont win that job

Transferable skills alone wont win that jobTransferable skills alone wont win that jobHeres how to sell transferable skills to new employers and land a job in a new industry.Massive layoffs and fewer jobs in many industries mean its possible (if not likely) that youll have to leave your industry or specialty area. Many job search experts and career coaches say transferable skills will help bridge the gap, but what does this phrase mean if youre the one receiving the pink slip?Heres how to transfer your current skills to win your next jobStart with your transferable skills, but dont stop there. You are not your job title. If youre facing a layoff or youre already there, dont limit your identity. You are much more than a job title. Actually, this rapidly changing, fluid job market makes it dangerous to tie yourself to a title.Begin by viewing your work experience as a set of competencies and roles that you have mastered and that can be useful from one occupation or industry to another. T his is what is meant by the term transferable skills. They afford you versatility and adaptability, and they open up new possibilities. But selling the skills alone is not enough.Tie benefits to each transferable skill.Sell results instead of skills. Especially today, skills are just a commodity.Employers buy results and are less impressed when a candidate promotes a laundry list of skills. Therefore, you should define how those transferable skills have been assets to your employers.Another way of looking at this is to ask yourself, How am I an asset to a companys balance sheet? Focus on how your work either helps the company make money or save money. Think beyond even your skill sets and job duties, and list every possible example of how you have helped to save time for your employer (Time equals money).By including several specific achievements, you separate yourself from your competitors and are much more likely to gain the attention of your next employer.Sit down with a legal pad and write down all of your achievements from current or past jobs. For example, if youre looking for a job as a project manager, make a list of your completed projects and ask the question, So what? after each one. What youre after is the achievement.Focus on the end result, the benefit to the client or employer as a result of something that you did or contributed. How did the client or employer benefit? How was someones life made better? Ideally, we want to end up with an answer as close to dollars as possible. If necessary, make an educated guess, as long as youre comfortable with the figure. If you cant put it in terms of dollars, then how about using a percentage? Achieved a 25 percent time savings by reorganizing the front filing ordnungsprinzip. If not a percentage, then how about a number? Reactivated 155 client accounts. Now review your list. Try to come up with a solid list of five or more achievements. Ideally, pick those to which you can attach a measurable result. If you can include a concise list of five to seven good achievements that emphasize return on investment (ROI) generated by something you actually did, youll score a lot quicker than just by trying to sell a laundry list of transferable skills.Sell these skill + benefit packagesEducation and transferable skills, while valuable, do not translate into benefits. Once youve taken some of those skills and tied a benefit to them in the above exercise, its now time to define yourself in one concise statement or sentence.Ask yourself what you can do for this employer that your competitors cant. You have a unique set of skills, experiences and talents. Now turn them into a unique selling proposition for the employer. A good USP says, Heres what I can do for you by highlighting one major benefit that you bring to this employer.Often called a personal branding statement, your USP provides the first impression of who you are and what you offer a potential employer. This is also how you describe yourself in any networking meeting you attend. A good USP will get you remembered and put you on the to-call list.A unique selling proposition is deceptively simple, yet it can be really tough to come up with one. It is a one-sentence description of the essence of you. This is your brand, your slogan - so take the time and thought to develop the right message for yourself. That one sentence should say three very important things 1.) Who you are 2.) your biggest strength and finally, 3.) the biggest benefit that you bring to the employer. For the greatest impact, that benefit should be something measurable. And the very best measure is dollars. Here is an example of a USPHands-on Operations Manager with strong people and team-building skills who has helped produce revenues of $2.8 million with a 22 percent margin for my previous employer.Notice that this simple sentence covers all three elements we discussed and ends with a desirable benefit that most any employer would love to have.SummaryIf you have to look beyond your present industry or job title for your next position, identifying those transferable skills is a good exercise. But remember Its only a starting point. Take a step further and think about how each of those skills actually benefits your employer. Then demonstrate how each of those skills answers an employers specific need and how it has made life better in some way for them. That means turning those skills into achievements and finally, summarizing them into a one-sentence USP that can stop a potential employer in their tracks and whet their appetite to know more.

10 habits of super likeable leaders

10 habits of super likeable leaders 10 habits of super likeable leaders If you want to be a leader whom people follow with absolute conviction, you have to be a likeable leader. Tyrants and curmudgeons with brilliant vision can command a reluctant following for a time, but it never lasts. They burn people out before they ever get to see what anyone is truly capable of.When I speak to smaller audiences, I often ask them to describe the best and worst leaders they have ever worked for. People inevitably ignore innate characteristics (intelligence, extraversion, attractiveness, and so on) and instead focus on qualities that are completely under the leader’s control, such as approachability, humility, and positivity. These words, and others like them, describe leaders who are skilled in emotional intelligence. TalentSmart research data from more than a million people shows that leaders who possess these qualities aren’t just highly likeable, they outperform those who don’t possess them by a large margin.Becoming a more likeable leader is completely unde r your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence (EQ). Unlike innate, fixed characteristics, such as your intelligence (IQ), EQ is a flexible skill that you can improve with effort. What follows are 10 key behaviors that emotionally intelligent leaders engage in that make them so likeable.1. They form personal connectionsEven in a crowded room, likeable leaders make people feel like they’re having a one-on-one conversation, as if they’re the only person in the room that matters. And, for that moment, they are. Likable leaders communicate on a very personal, emotional level. They never forget that there’s a flesh-and-blood human being standing in front of them.2.  They’re approachableYou know those people who only have time for you if you can do something for them? Likeable leaders truly believe that everyone, regardless of rank or ability, is worth their time and attention. They make everyone feel valuable because they  believe  that everyone  is  valuable.3. Theyâ €™re humbleFew things kill likability as quickly as arrogance. Likeable leaders don’t act as though they’re better than you because they don’t  think  that they’re better than you.Rather than being a source of prestige, they see their leadership position as bringing them additional accountability for serving those who follow them.4. They’re positiveLikeable leaders always maintain a positive outlook, and this shows in how they describe things. They don’t  have  to give a presentation to the board of directors; they  get  to share their vision and ideas with the board. They don’t  have  to go on a plant tour; they  get  to meet and visit with the people who make their company’s products. They don’t even  have  to diet; they  get  to experience the benefits of eating healthfully.Even in undeniably negative situations, likeable leaders emanate an enthusiastic hope for the future, a confidence that they can help make tomorrow better than today.5. They’re even-keeledW hen it comes to their own accomplishments and failures, likeable leaders take things in stride. They don’t toot their own horns, nor do they get rattled when they blow it.They savor success without letting it go to their heads, and they readily acknowledge failure without getting mired in it. They learn from both and move on.6. They’re generousWe’ve all worked for someone who constantly holds something back, whether it’s knowledge or resources. They act as if they’re afraid you’ll outshine them if they give you access to everything you need to do your job.Likeable leaders are unfailingly generous with whom they know, what they know, and the resources they have access to. They want you to do well more than anything else because they understand that this is their job as a leader and because they’re confident enough to never worry that your success might make them look bad.In fact, they believe that your success  is  their success.7. They demonstrate integrityLikeable lea ders inspire trust and admiration through their  actions,  not just their words. Many leaders  say  that integrity is important to them, but likeable leaders walk their talk by demonstrating integrity every day.Even a leader who oozes charm won’t be likable if that charm isn’t backed by a solid foundation of integrity.8. They read people like a  bookLikeable leaders know how to read people as unspoken communication is often more important than the words people say. They note facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice in order to  get  what’s really going on with their people. In other words, they have high social awareness, a critical EQ skill.9. They have substanceDaniel Quinn said, “Charisma only wins people’s attention. Plasma Pulsing Reanimates Wells

Plasma Pulsing Reanimates Wells Plasma Pulsing Reanimates Wells Oil and natural gas wells stop producing long before theyve sucked dry all the resources in a reservoir. Particles of dirt, rock, as well as deposits of wax and other debris eventually clog the drainage area as well as the pores and passages introduced at a wells birth. When debris first kills production, typically less than half of the resources below have been harvested. Now clogged wells can be cheaply and cleanly rejuvenated with plasma pulse technology. In the past, well owners hoping to flush out those plugged channels and get things moving again had to turn to dense chemicals, packers and high pressure, or explosives. Each of these comes with its own set of environmental dangers. And they can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. But now, with a technology developed in Russia, the well treatment company Propell has slashed those risks and the price tag, too. Natural gas and oil companies with a delinquent well can start producing again with a mere $10,000 or so, and with little cost to the environment. The technique is fairly simple. A long tube is lowered into the well. Capacitors are charged and then dump their power in an instantmicroseconds, actually. How we generate the plasma is very much like a light bulb, says Trent Hunter, Propells CTO. We have a filament that extends across two terminals and when we discharge electricity stored in the tool, that filament glows white-hot and ultimately explodes. Its the very fast release of that energy that generates the high power to create the shock wave. Some call it non-linear physics. I dont think of it as nonlinear, I tend to think of it as very quickwe get a pressure pulse that goes form zero, to orders of magnitude of 10,000 psi, instantaneously. The Plasma Pulse Streamer. Image: Propell Shock Wave That plasma bubble travels laterally at a mile per second, hauling a shock wave along behind it, and radiating outward like waves in pondbut very fast waves. Its also tuned to induce harmonics in the reservoir. Together, the shock wave and harmonics blast and clear away plugs in the well and any other potentially productive passage. Conveniently, the blast is powerful enough to crush rock, but not so powerful as to harm steel. Its similar to hitting a brick on an anvil with a hammer, says Hunter. The brick gets smashed in the middle, but the steel is undamaged. It can absorb the energy of the hammer. Thus the well gets cleaned but remains undamaged. Other rehabilitative tools need to be pulled out of a well after a single blast, and must be redressed before being used again. But the plasma pulse streamer, as the tool is known, can deliver several sets of 100 pulses at a go. The entire treatment requires much less manpower and can be completed in a matter of hours, making it a cheap and more environmentally friendly option. Certainly our technique has a very low footprint from a couple of different perspectives relative to our competition, says Hunter. Its a low-energy technique, and its a low time and intervention technique, so we expend less carbon. Its less pressure, and we dont use explosives, and we dont use chemicals. Cheaper and Cleaner Oil and natural gas companies usually need rehabilitation sometime between the middle and end of a wells life. But this technology has shown that there are advantages to using their treatment at the start. Before a well has produced its first barrel, drilling fluids may slow flow. They get more productivity out of their well when they treat it with plasma pulsing at day one, rather than two or three years down the road, says Hunter. Whenever its used, the plasma pulse offers a cheaper, cleaner treatment than the options available in the past. As an intervention technique, says Hunter, it is, in my opinion, one of the most compelling value propositions out there to rehabilitate productivity without the risks of the other techniques. 5 classic faux pas to avoid when asking for a promotion

5 classic faux pas to avoid when asking for a promotion 5 classic faux pas to avoid when asking for a promotion Always do your research.Your heart’s beating faster as you walk into your boss’s office to ask for a raise. This is the big one: the one where you ask for an extra 10, 15, or even 20% more in salary. You state your case, and you’re told you’ll be considered. Weeks go by, and you hear nothing.Does this sound gut-wrenchingly familiar? There’s a good chance you committed one or more of the five fatal mistakes of negotiating a raise. I’ve been on both sides of the table, as an employee navigating annual reviews and asking for raises, and as an employer and CEO conducting more than 100 annual reviews since 2009.In order to broach the topic of a raise, you need to first understand what’s at stake. Your employer will give you a raise when you’ve met all of the following conditions: You are producing more tangible value in your role than you’ve been compensated for since your last performance review (i.e. You are producing more, high-quality output). You are taking on responsibilities and initiatives outside of your core role and are excelling at them without dropping the ball. You have built up enough value in your company that your particular skills and talents are difficult to replace. Once you’ve understood that any negotiation is based on two parties agreeing upon the perceived value being discussed, you’ll have a much more successful outcome. Steer clear from making any of these disastrous mistakes during a salary negotiation:You don’t know what the market pays for your positionIf you don’t understand the changing value of your role in the market, you won’t be able to anchor your request with facts. Market value is determined by: What you could earn for the same role elsewhere What your company would pay to replace you What your company would pay to keep you Compare apples to apples when researching your role. Account for market size, geography, and cost of living standards. For instance, salaries in Toronto, Canada will be very different from those in San Francisco. You’re asking for a raise prior to proving your capabilitiesEmployers are wary about paying for success in advance of it being achieved. If in the last year, you have over-performed in your role, but your responsibilities have stayed the same this year, asking for a performance bonus is much more appropriate and likely to get awarded. To increase overall compensation, you must increase your responsibilities and do more work that creates tangible value for your company. A reasonable boss would be happy to compensate you for it.You think working harder is the same as producing moreAs coach John Wooden used to say, “Never mistake activity with achievement.” Applying effort, being a team player, and being a social butterfly at work won’t necessarily increase your value. If you find yourself talking about how you deserve a raise because you’re a hard worker, you’re automatically setting yourself up for disappointment. To increase your salary, simply become an achiever in your role. Think of yourself as a sports player: The more goals you score, the better your contract gets. You aren’t prepared to show your boss how you’ve provided more valuePrepare a well-structured document to show your boss how you’ve increased value for the company. Doing this prior to discussing your raise not only increases your confidence when speaking with your boss, but your boss will be pleasantly surprised to see that you’re so well prepared. You aren’t asking the right questionsYour boss may have a number of objections to green-lighting your request for a raise. Understand that timing is everything when it comes to salary negotiations. In the event that you face an objection from your boss, ask him or her these questions: “Under what circumstances would you be happy to give me the raise I’m asking for?” “Which of my statements do you agree with? Which do have concerns about?” “What specific things need to happen so that we both agree this raise is merited at our next performance review? Remember that “no” doesn’t mean “never.” It means “not right now,” which is precisely why asking better questions will help you navigate and pre-determine the factors involved in scoring your next raise.BusinessCollective, launched in partnership with Citi, is a virtual mentorship program powered by North America’s most ambitious young thought leaders, entrepreneurs, executives and small business owners.

10 Qualities Recruiters Never Want to See in Candidates

10 Qualities Recruiters Never Want to See in Candidates 10 Qualities Recruiters Never Want to See in Candidates When it comes to interviewing, there’s no such thing as one recipe for success - what a recruiter is looking for will largely depend on a company’s needs, job requirements and culture fit . But even though the things recruiters like to see in a candidate aren’t widely agreed upon, the things they don’t like to see often are - few recruiters, for example, would disagree that being late is a turnoff. And if you’re hoping to ace the interview, the more of these pet peeves you avoid, the better. We reached out to a handful of career experts to see which traits and habits drive recruiters crazy - read on to learn more, and avoid them like the plague. When evaluating candidates, recruiters want to get into the nitty-gritty: metrics that illustrate the results you’ve achieved, specific ideas you have for the company, anecdotes from your previous work experience. “The interviewer is trying to gauge your skill and ability level from a short meeting - not an easy task,” says Jessie West of West Coaching and Consulting . “If you cannot provide examples and stories that prove you really have the abilities you promoted on your resume, they will not believe you are a good fit for the role.” Make sure to “prepare examples from past jobs that will highlight what you can do for the company and the type of employee you will be in the position. Practice telling the story of a past accomplishment to a friend and get their feedback,” West recommends. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: even if your former employer was really, truly awful, trash talking them will get you nowhere. “It’s never a good idea to bash your old employer or throw your former boss under the bus because it just makes you look petty… Employers are looking for versatile and adaptive employees, so harping on the bad things at your prior company will only make you look like a Debbie Downer,” says Wendi Weiner, Resume Writer & Career Transition Coach . Beyond that, “being a jerk will make us question whether you’ll do the same if someone asks you about us,” adds Bill Kennedy, Senior Recruiter at AWeber . Instead, if asked about why you’re searching for a new opportunity, “rephrase the negative into a positive. Consider focusing on the things [about the current company] that elicited you to search for a new role, such as a solid work culture, better growth opportunities or even work-life balance ,” Weiner recommends. The honest reason why you’re applying for a job might be that you need a paycheck - but even if that’s your primary motivation, don’t highlight it. It suggests a lack of enthusiasm for the company and opportunity at hand, which is guaranteed to rub employers the wrong way. “Recruiters and hiring managers don’t want to hire candidates who are looking for any job. Candidates who aren’t really interested in the job aren’t likely to perform well or stay long,” explains Chrysta Bairre, Career Coach at Live Love Work . “Throughout the hiring process, including [in] your cover letter, interview, etc., be sure to indicate why you’re interested in that particular job. Show your enthusiasm and interest in the opportunity and organization!” Just because a company wants you to fit in with their culture doesn’t mean they want you to be a yes man (or woman). “Recruiters don’t want to see candidates that don’t have their own opinions or parrot things back,” says Elizabeth Becker, Client Partner and Career Expert at PROTECH . “Hiring managers want strong thinkers who can provide their own insight - not someone who simply says what they think is expected.” That being said, you want to make sure that you don’t come off as a steamroller, either. “Finding respectful ways to present counter-opinions to a recruiter or hiring manager is still essential,” Becker says. So share your thoughts, but don’t come across as insulting or condescending. Don’t arrive on time, have your resume on hand or remember the key achievements you want to highlight? Don’t expect a call back from a recruiter. “Interviewers never want candidates who are unprepared, as that suggests you might be unprepared when you show up for work,” Bairre says. “Come to your interview prepared with 3-5 talking points [and] supporting stories and accomplishments that highlight how you are uniquely qualified for the specific job you applied for.” It’s pretty tough to find a job where you primarily work on your own without interacting with others - most companies today are highly collaborative. Because of this, verifying in an interview that you play nice with others is often top-of-mind for recruiters and hiring managers. “Being rude or disrespectful is a good way to remove yourself from consideration,” Becker says. “Since good recruiters have a strong relationship with their clients and hiring managers, it can reflect poorly on them to present a candidate with a poor attitude.” So make sure to say “please” and “thank you”, practice active listening and generally treat others the way you would like to be treated. Another way to prove that you’re a team player is showing humility. Otherwise, you risk looking like a know-it-all. “ Confidence is a great skill to have - however, there’s a fine line between being confident and arrogant,” Becker says. “As a recruiter, I’ve had candidate proudly tell me their six months in the industry is equal to someone with three years of experience” - a major no-no. You want to flaunt your skills without making it sound like it’s your way or the highway. To do this, be realistic about your abilities, share stories that illustrate your wins rather than just saying “I’m awesome at XYZ” and make sure to give credit where credit is due. When you first meet with a recruiter or hiring manager, you probably have about 15-30 minutes to make a lasting impression - so make it count. Avoid the flowery language and details, and get straight to the meat. “Recruiters and hiring managers never want your entire life story. Candidates who include too much information… make it harder for the hiring manager to sort through all the information and decide what information may be relevant,” Bairre says. Instead, Bairre recommends sticking strictly to your relevant experience and leaving out the rest. If there’s one way to become forgettable in an interview, it’s to reveal that you haven’t done your research on a company. Learning the basic facts about a company - like their industry, competitors and names of their executives - as well as a little interview prep is a must if you want to impress. “Always do your research about the position, department and company where you are interviewing. Read company websites, reviews on Glassdoor and ask your contacts for information” ahead of an interview, West advises. “Come prepared with questions like ‘What makes your most successful employees in this role thrive?’ or ‘What pain points/challenges can the right candidate in this role solve?’” adds Kennedy. “Coming with a pre-written list of questions and taking notes on the answers will really show me you are motivated for the role.” No matter how casual the office, you always want to mind your Ps and Qs. I’ve worked at places where employees dropped the F-bomb on a daily basis and hoodies were practically a required uniform, but if you displayed that same behavior in an interview, there’s no way you’d move past the first round. Interviews are all about showing your best self to your potential employer. “Using profanity or slang, mentioning personal or health problems, talking bad about a past employer are all considered unprofessional,” West says. “If you are not on your best behavior in the most professional of arenas (a job interview), hiring managers will see you as too much of a risk to represent the company to clients.” And “if you have any doubt whether something is okay to say in an interview, err on the side of caution and don’t say it,” West adds.

Women cant network the same way as successful men and this is why

Women can't network the same way as successful men and this is why Women can't network the same way as successful men and this is why When it comes to career success, women face different barriers than their male counterparts do. A long history of pipeline problems, unequal pay and gendered roles have held some women back, even as more female professionals enter the workforce. And so it may not come as a surprise that women who want to ascend the ranks in the business world cannot rely on the same networking tropes as men do, according to a recent Harvard Business Review article based on research published by the National Academy of Sciences.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!“Our study suggests that women face a greater challenge in networking to find professional opportunities â€" they, more than men, need to maintain both wide networks and informative inner circles in order to land the best positions,”  Brian Uzzi, one of the study’s co-authors, writes in HBR.  Uzzi and his fellow researchers studied emails among alumni who graduated from a top U.S. business school in 2006 and 2007 to see how people’s social networks affected the authority and pay they were given in their job placement after graduation.Among men, the key to success was centrality in their network. Men who were in the top quartile of centrality  among their MBA network found jobs with 1.5 times greater pay and authority than those who were least central.Uzzi has a simple explanation for why centrality makes all the difference.“Centrality is positively correlated with  accessing job market information,” he writes.” Even though much of this is publicly available online, it can be much faster to get the information you need from  different MBA students  who have contacts across various groups of students who are familiar with employers you’re interested in.”What changes for women? If women follow their male colleagues’ lead, chances are they’ll fall short of expectations.“Women who had networks tha t most resembled those of successful men… placed into leadership positions that were among the lowest in authority and pay,” Uzzi says.Instead, he and his co-authors found that women required one additional ingredient for success - and those who had it could expect jobs with much higher authority and pay than their peers who didn’t.Women do need centrality in their network, like men, Uzzi explains. But they also require “an inner circle of close female contacts” if they want access to the upper echelons of executive leadership. Preferably, this inner circle will be part of different networks, so that women can expand their reach and information pool through their closest colleagues.“Because women seeking positions of executive leadership often face cultural and political hurdles that men typically do not, they benefit from an inner circle of close female contacts that can share private information about things like an organization’s attitudes toward female leaders, wh ich helps strengthen women’s job search, interviewing, and negotiation strategies,” Uzzi writes. He continues, “While men had inner circles in their networks too â€" contacts that they communicated with most â€" we found that the gender composition of males’ inner circles was not related to job placement.”Uzzi makes several suggestions for women who want to succeed: Aim for quality over quantity while networking, embrace randomness and beware of closed inner circles, he writes. So perhaps it’s time to start reaching out to female colleagues - if you’re a woman, they may be your roadmap to the C-suite.You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Stop Worrying About Losing Your Job - The Muse

How to Stop Worrying About Losing Your Job - The Muse How to Stop Worrying About Losing Your Job A lot of thoughts tend to go through your head when you’re worried that you’re not good enough for your job. You might be convinced that your boss asked to see your most recent project again because she’s finally figured out that you’re terrible. Or maybe you wake up with the sinking feeling that you weren’t invited to happy hour last night because your smarter colleagues wanted to talk about how dumb you are. There are plenty more, of course. But as a card-carrying member of the “Impostor Syndrome Forever Club,” I can tell you there’s one humongous lie that the majority of club members believe on a regular basis. And because it’s often really hard for people to put it into words, I’ll do it for you. I’m one mistake away from losing my job. You’d have an incredibly hard time finding someone who’s never made a mistake at work. But while some people are good at moving on and focusing on the next thing, you and I often can’t shake this sinking feeling without assuming the worst. Personally, I’ve lost count of the number of times I made an administrative mistake and figured that it wouldn’t be long before someone from HR came down to my desk and politely asked me to never show my face around the office again. But the good news is that unless someone has come to you and explicitly said that you’re on thin ice, most people understand (and accept!) that even the smartest people slip up. And that also applies to you. You might be thinking, “Rich, this sounds great, but I’m still pretty sure that if my next email to my boss doesn’t have flawless grammar, she’s going to send me packing.” And trust me, I had that thought at least 25 times as I wrote this article, so I get where you’re coming from. But like most instances in which you feel insufficient for your job, putting yourself at ease is often as simple as asking for additional feedback on whatever’s worrying you. Here’s how it works: Find someone you trust and ask for their honest take. In this case, you might ask a co-worker to read over the email before you send it; in others, maybe you ask a small group to hear a trial run of your presentation, or to give you input after a meeting you led. You might not love everything you hear- but take it from me, a little constructive feedback can help you move forward because you’ll have the knowledge you need to tackle any real issues. (And if asking for honesty’s making you nervous, try this feedback trick.) Plus, you’ll find out how your colleagues feel about you and your work- and often times, that’s a quick fix for imposter syndrome. After all, half the battle is fighting back thoughts that everyone thinks poorly of you. So if you’re currently stuck in this “one slip-up and I’m out” mindset, you need to memorize this sentence (and keep saying it until you believe it): “Smart people make mistakes, too- and they also know when to ask for help.”

How to Manage Entrepreneurial-Minded Employees

How to Manage Entrepreneurial-Minded Employees How to Manage Entrepreneurial-Minded Employees How to Manage Entrepreneurial-Minded Employees Bennington, Contributing Writer See if this sounds familiar. Youve justbrought ona new hire(say a Gen Y or new grad) who you really like well, except for one small problem: Theyre gunning to move up. Like, now. And while you think theyre just dipping a toe in their current role, theyre pushing for more responsibility and higher pay. This is a very tricky and very common dilemma for managers today. In fact, I just interviewed a young woman who was 12 weeks into the workforce and already frustrated with her career. She worked for a great company, had a great manager and liked her job so what was the deal? Get this: Her position had a two-year promotion track. Two years is like a decade to me, were her exact words. ManagingRacehorses I know, I know: Youre thinking thats ridiculous and she should feel lucky to be employed, right? Well, frankly, thats the problem. Because for as much as we like to moan about how long we had to pay our dues (and walk 8 miles in the snow) while insisting the next generation do the same, the fact of the matter is that its a different world. Yes, we can blame the parents for coddling their kids to the point thatthey expect you to cave in too. But it still doesnt change the fact thattop talent a.k.a. the ones we all want to hire are like racehorses behind the starting line. Theyre stomping, chomping at the bit, and just waiting for the doors of opportunity to fly open so they can chase the career carrot. Perhaps you recall the feeling. After all, its the reason you started your business in the first place. You wanted that entrepreneurial paradox of control and freedom. And so do they. Stoking Entrepreneurial Engagement Alright maybe you cant give them control. (After all, thats your job, right?) But there is something else you can give that means just at much if not more at this stage in their career. You can give them progress. Because heres the thing: Its easy for new grads to feel as if theyre falling behind when were all surrounded by tales of 27-year-old CEOs. (Geez, even I feel behind sometimes!) But if your hire feels that he or she is learning, growing, and advancing their skills and network they will reward you with employee loyalty! Just ask my first boss, Skip Lineberg, who turned what was supposed to be a temp job (for me) into a six year partnership not to mention a book deal. In retrospect, Im a little embarrassed to admit this but when I started working with Skip I asked for a promotion after just nine months. Here is the super-savvy way he managed it. First, he listened. He didnt try and convince me that I was too inexperienced or that nine months in the workforce was a little too early to get yippy about moving up. Instead, he heard me out and, after I made my case, he said hed give it some thought. Then, he asked me to prove my worth. He presented me with a simple one-pager called, Prove youre worth it. It was a list of 10 tasks I had to pick seven to complete in addition to the keeping up with the responsibilities of my current role. The list included things like: Picking a system in the office I felt could be improved and telling him how Id fix it. Hosting a Lunch n Learn for the rest of the staff. Attending a professional development course. Reading a classic business book and writing a summary of what I learned and how I was going to apply it to my job. You get the idea. Next, a check-in. He asked me to check-in with him after Id finished a task or if I had any questions along the way. After that, I was on my own. And while my manager never gave me a formal deadline (I suspect that was a not-so-subtle initiative test) it took me about 6 months to get all seven tasks complete. However, when everything was said and done I got the promotion and he got to buy some time. He also got to evaluate how I handled stress, how I solved problems, how committed I was, observemy employeeattitude and if what I would bring to jumping through those hoops to earn that new position. Smart cookie, huh? This was definitely a win-win for both of us and an exceptional example of great management skills. So if your Gen Y workers or new grads or any employee really feels like theyre ready to move up, but youre not quite sure, remember: Make em prove theyre worth it. If they are trust me they will.
