Cover Letter Follow-Up - To conclude this weeks posts about cover letters, a few points about following up What About Follow Up? Follow up of your letters is essential! The success of your job search will be directly related to how well you do this. Employers simply do not have enough time to respond to every letter they receive. Consider preparing a script to help you make your calls. Try to make your calls between Tuesday and Thursday and either first thing in the morning (8:30-9:00) or at the end of the day (4:30-5:00). These are times you will catch more people at their desks. Try to avoid leaving a message on an answering machine if possible. If you do not leave a message, you have the option of calling a few more times and thereby keeping the ball in your court. However, if you call at various times and never reach a person, leave a message with your name, that you are following up on correspondence, request a return call, and leave contact information. If you do not hear from them within a week, try again. Your persistence should pay off. If you do not have any luck reaching someone via the telephone, it is not a bad idea to touch base via email. Explain that you are following up regarding applying for a position and that you will continue to try to reach them by phone. Japan Considering Legislation Requiring Workers to Take Time Off A law forcing you to take vacation days? Sounds like a bureaucratic gift, but in Japan, itâs meant as a workaholic intervention. Legislation will be submitted in the countryâs current session of parliament that will make it the legal responsibility of employers to ensure that workers use their holiday time. Japan has been studying such legislation since 2012, when a consensus concluded that the health, social, and productivity costs of Japanâs extreme work ethic were too high. While it may seem crazy to Americans to require a person to take a vacation, we suffer from more than a touch of workaholism in this country. In Japan, 22% of workers toil for more than 49 hours a week; in the U.S., itâs 16%. But in France and Germany, only 11% of the population puts in that many hours, according to data compiled by the Japanese government. And when it comes to unused vacation days, we are second only to Japan among developed nations. The average Japanese worker used only 7 of the 18 vacation days allotted each year, or 39% of their annual paid leave, a survey by Expedia Japan found. According to a study by Oxford Economics, U.S. workers who had paid time off typically left 3 vacation days on the table. And if you look just at the 41% of U.S. workers who said they did not plan on taking all their vacation, the average number of unused days jumps to 8. Weâre also similar to Japan in another way: the percentage of workers who donât take any vacation at all. A whopping 17% of the Japanese workforce does not take a single day of paid vacation, compared with 13% of Americans. Both of those figures are startlingly high in light of the fact that there wasnât a single Australian in the Expedia Japan survey who didnât take off at least one day in the past year. Trending in the Wrong Direction? While Japan is working on decreasing unused days, America seems to be heading the other way. Use of vacation days are at their lowest point in the past four decades, the Oxford Economics study found. Fears of keeping your job, being passed over for promotions or lead projects, coming back to a staggering pile of work, or feeling like youâre the only one who can do your job all push Americans to stay at the officeâ"or, when they do actually take a holiday, to do some work remotely. Employment website Glassdoor found that 61% of us have logged on while we were supposed to be logged off. This shift can hurt us big time when you consider that employees who use more vacation days end up with better performance reviews, according to internal research by audit firm EY. Increased vacation time has also been linked to increased worker productivity, other research has shown. Japan has another key piece of legislation that the U.S. lacks: It guarantees workers 10 paid days off a year. Unlike most other countries with advanced economies, âthe United States is the only advanced economy that does not guarantee its workers any paid vacation time and is one of only a few rich countries that does not require employers to offer at least some paid holidays,â noted a report by the Center for Economic and Policy Research, a Washington think tank. Nearly a quarter of Americans receive no paid days off at all. Considering that workers in the European Union enjoyâ"and useâ"a minimum of 20 paid vacation days and as many as 13 paid national holidays, it seems Japan isnât the only country that could use a little legal help taking a break. Embracing the Unexpected Embracing the UnexpectedThis is a guest post by Nicole Knoebel for Student Stories.When I moved to New York City last semester as part of Marist Colleges Marist in Manhattan program, I welches shocked by how terrified I was. Im a Long Island girl whos spent her ritterlich share of time visiting the city and dreaming of the Carrie Bradshaw life. So why was I so afraid?Id written for my school paper and done some blogging, but interning for a real life magazine was on a whole other level. What if I wasnt prepared? What if I didnt like it? What if I was wrong and it wasnt the career path for me after all?My first day as an intern at Seventeen was an exhilarating blur of an experience that only got more incredible and exciting as the semester went on. I started off with fears of an internship a la The Devil Wears Prada and left with a confidence I didnt even know I could have. My editors were the most supportive, helpful people and I can only dream of working wit h them again in the future. Instead of the life of fetching coffee and running errands that movies led me to believe was reality, I entered a world of constant surprises and unexpected opportunities.There was no normal day at Seventeen. I spent my days researching for my editors articles, transcribing celebrity interviews, and compiling the entertainment news stories of the day for the entire editorial staff. I sat in on multiple musical performances in the office (hello, cute British boys of Rixton) and even got to conduct my own interview.On one unexpected occasion, I got to fill in for a photo intern and spent the day shopping in Union Square for props for a photo-shoot and worked the entire next day in the East Village assisting on set, schmoozing with male models, and babysitting an adorable puppy making a cameo in our photo-shoot. A girl could do worse.The absolute greatest opportunity came when my internship coordinator and Assistant to the Editor in Chief, Meaghan, allowed m e to spend the day in her shoes and fill in for her. Being Ann Shokets assistant for the day was an eye-opening experience that allowed me to meet so many new people in the office and tackle a level of responsibility that was daunting but so rewarding. When the day was over, I was exhausted from nerves but thrilled and elated that I actually felt like I belonged in the industry.If theres one thing I learned from Seventeen, its to embrace the unexpected. I walked into work every day not knowing what Id be doing, but thats what made it so exciting Ive learned to live my life with spontaneity and enthusiasm as a result of my internship experience.As an intern, I never said no. I said yes to every opportunity and Im a better person and a better writer for it.
